We invite principals who have retired or otherwise left principal-ship to become members of the Alumni. Alumni membership is free and members receive an electronic newsletter and invitations to regular social functions. If you are about to retire, or are recently retired, you will be contacted by Gary and invited to join the Alumni. You may email Gary on

The Convenor of the Alumni is Gary Moss, a retired Auckland principal who will be known to many current and retired principals. Gary is assisted by Sue Green, the APPA Executive Secretary, in his role in co-ordinating Alumni newsletters and events, among other things.

This is the list provided by the APPA Office but there may be others not listed who would be interested in being part of the APPA Alumni – please email the APPA Office or me with details (in 2016 there were 5 retired Principals with whom contact was lost, but of course, some may have wanted to forget completely about schools and all that!)

Despite contacting their last school  for contact information, no email details were provided for the above people with an *asterisk and they will not receive Alumni communications unless an email address is provided.

On behalf of the Auckland Primary Principals Association and Alumni members I welcome the 2017 retirees and I invite them to come to the 3 functions we have each year as this is a way of retaining contact with colleagues and also learning from the current APPA President and Council members the educational issues of the moment – and there are sure to be some!

There is also a Retired Principals and Others group (now called MOCCA) where guys meet for lunch at a different RSA in Auckland on the last Wednesday of each month.  Birkenhead RSA is the first venue for this year – from about 11.30 on Wednesday 28th February. If interested send me an email or just arrive – you would be most welcome.

Mark this date in your diary for an informal gathering  at the Kohia Centre, 78 Epson Avenue, Epson.  Drive down and up into the parking building, and if the barrier is across just tell the speaker box that you have come for an APPA Alumni meeting and the barrier will, hopefully, rise for you to drive in and park.

In the past we have had up to 30 members coming to this first event of the year which is funded by the APPA council.

Please think about joining us, make contact with other recent retirees,  and feel free to bring your spouse/partner. Please send me an email if you plan to come.

The APPA Alumni list that I hold has the names of 250 retired Principals from Primary/Intermediate schools in the Auckland area. 200 can be reached by email and the remaining 50 do not seem to have email addresses.  In a 2013 Term 4 Newsletter I matched those without email addresses  with someone who does receive Alumni messages by email asking them to telephone the non-email person  or copy off the newsletter or message and mail it to them so that they are kept informed. Please continue to do that – some time this year I will review this list as I guess  quite a few have forgotten who is the person they were to contact.

One important function of the Alumni Convenor is to inform everyone of the death of a past Principal. When it is known that a member has passed away I would appreciate being informed giving some information about the person’s past so that I can email the information to members.

Peter passed away at Rotorua Hospital on 10th February. He was 82. Peter retired from Principal of Pakuranga Intermediate in 1995. A funeral for Peter will be held at Osbornes Funeral Chapel, 197 Old Taupo Road, Rotorua at 11a.m on Saturday 17th February.

APPA Alumni extend condolences to his wife, Margaret and his family.

If you think you will be most likely coming to the afternoon tea at the Kohia Centre in Epson on Thursday 15 March would you please flick me an email and that will give me an idea of how many to cater for.

Thank you  – eat broccoli and make the most of another year!

Kind regards,

Gary Moss  – Convenor  APPA Alumni
